European Union Hack Calls Out Ron DeSantis for His Reasonable Position on Ukraine

Earlier this week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made waves after his response to Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s policy questionnaire with regards to Ukraine.

DeSantis said the following about the Russo-Ukrainian conflict:

While the U.S. has many vital national interests… becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them.

The Florida governor’s statement was not only criticized by neoconservative politicians in the Republican Party but it was also met with fierce criticism from across the pond. Former Prime Minister of Belgium and current member of the European Parliament (MEP) Guy Verhofstadt took DeSantis to task on Twitter, posting

John McCain was right; Putin is a killer & thug who wants to build a new Russian empire.

Hearing Ron DeSantis calling the invasion of Ukraine a ‘territorial dispute’ McCain would turn in his grave.

What became of the once great Republican Party & is Europe ready for this?

It’s rich to watch European politicians whine about the Republican Party’s more realist shift towards foreign policy. Since when is it the US’s role to be Europe’s security guarantor? Also, invoking John McCain, one of the biggest superhawks in DC history, just shows how delusional Europe’s leading politicians are.

In fairness, on the foreign policy front, DeSantis can’t fully be trusted. BLP previously reported on DeSantis supporting the imposition of sanctions against Russia during the early stages of the Euromaidan Revolution. However, DeSantis has demonstrated that he’s a smart political operator who is able to read the room and pick up on the latest political trends that the grassroots care about.

Growing numbers of Republican voters are becoming restless about the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and don’t want the US to continue to be involved in this geopolitical kerfuffle. DeSantis has, to his credit, picked up on this. Hopefully, DeSantis starts taking stronger realist/non-interventionist stances on Russia and other foreign policy issues.  The last thing America needs is to get involved in another great power conflict.
