2.8 Tons of Meth and Fentanyl were Seized at Southern Border with California

According to Customs and Border Protection, CBP officials seized 2.8 tons of methamphetamine and fentanyl at a commercial border crossing in California. Bob Price of Breitbart News observed that “Officers found the deadly drugs in a shipment of plastic household items.”
On August 5, 2021, a number of CBP officers tasked with patrolling the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility watched as a tractor-trailer transporting plastic household items made its way from Mexico to the US. After an initial interview, a CBP official directed the driver, a Mexican citizen, to head to a secondary inspection station, per information from CBP higher-ups.
More CBP officers conducted non-intrusive inspections through the use of an x-ray scan and discovered several irregularities in the trailer. According to Price, “An exterior search by a K-9 team also confirmed suspicions of the presence of drugs in the trailer.”
The officers proceeded to carry out a physical inspection of the trailer and discovered 414 packages of narcotics stuffed in the cargo area. CBP officials confirmed that the drugs tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl.
The weight of the meth and fentanyl powder seized, totaled 5,528 and 127 pounds respectively. The total cash value of the drugs was $12,990,749.
The Mexican national was arrested while the drugs he transported and the tractor-trailer were seized by CBP agents.
Soon thereafter, special agents with ICE Homeland Security Investigation placed the Mexican national in their custody to interrogate him further and process him for federal drug smuggling charges.
At the moment, the driver is being held in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego, California.
“This amount of fentanyl and methamphetamine is enough to ruin countless lives and fund transnational criminal organizations,” Pete Flores, CBP Director of Field Operations in San Diego declared in a statement. “I’m proud of our officers’ efforts at all Ports of Entry within the San Diego Field Office to intercept this and all smuggling attempts.”
Compared to other drug busts, this recent discovery of contraband was likely a small-time operation. However, similar discoveries will become repeated occurrences throughout the Biden administration due to its flimsy commitment to border security.
Border security is an integral part of maintaining a functional polity. However, for a number of ideological sub-sects in American politics, the idea of protecting the nation’s border is treated with scorn.
The present Biden administration currently embodies this trend, as it has made great efforts to undermine the sensible reforms of the preceding administration. In the meantime, the Republican Party needs to embrace populism and start using immigration as the #1 wedge issue heading into the 2022 midterms.
