20 YEARS: Iran Sentences Woman to Prison for Removing Mandatory Hijab

A woman in Iran has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for removing her hijab in an act of protest.

Shaparak Shajarizadeh said she was jailed for “opposing the compulsory hijab” and “waving a white flag of peace in the street” in a post on her blog.

In Iran, which is an Islamic theocracy, it is required that women wear hijabs at all time. Throughout Iran, #FreeIran protests have erupted almost daily since December 2017 by Iranians is protest of the oppressive Iranian regime under Iran’s Supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

While osme of the protests have turned violent, many of the protests have been peaceful, including demonstrations by Iranian woman who have started the trend of removing their mandatory hijabs.

Since February, over 29 women have been arrested in Iran for removing their hijabs.

Nasrin Sotoudeh, a human rights lawyer who represented Shajarizadeh and other women who have been arrested for removing their hijabs, was arrested in June.

According to Shajarizadeh lawyers, Shajarizadeh was tortured and beaten as a form of punishment after she was arrested for removing her hijab.

While women in Iran are being imprisoned and beaten for taking off their hijabs, self proclaimed leaders of the anti- Trump Women’s March and liberal feminist movement in the United States, including Linda Sarsour and Tamika Mallory have actively encouraged women to wear and celebrate the hijab, even making the face of their movement a woman in an American flag hijab and promoting fake holidays such as “International Hijab Day”.

Regarding the issue of women being arrested and tortured in the streets of Iran for removing their compulsory hijabs, pro-hijab, pro-Jihad, and pro-Sharia Law Linda Sarsour was not available for comment.
