Anti-Trump Hotel to Open in DC, Blocks From Trump International

A company is launching the first “politically motivated” hotel, created for liberal activists, in Washington, DC.

The Eaton Workshop Hotel will be opening just north of the National Mall in the Spring 2018, and is being marketed as the “anti-Trump hotel.” The company’s flagship hotel will be just a few blocks from the glamorous and popular Trump International Hotel, but will “focus on community outreach” according to a report from Axios.

When activist guests manage to borrow their parent’s credit cards so that they can check in to the Eaton Workshop, they will be greeted by a highly predictable art installation at the registration desk: vintage televisions replaying footage from the 2012 and 2016 elections. The footage, the artist hopes, will make people ponder “how did our country get where it is today?”

The theme won’t just end at the front desk however, as Bloomberg reports that “the brand will weave a liberal philosophy into every aspect of the guest experience, some more obvious than others.”

The hotel will also feature TED style talks on liberal politics, organic mattresses, political artwork, a podcast, Reiki and sound baths instead of a traditional spa — and a co-working space that will “prioritize memberships for progressive startups, activists, and artists. Essentially, the project sounds like an overpriced hippie commune experience for limousine liberals.

The hotel is the brainchild of Katherine Lo, the daughter of Ka Shui Lo, the creator and executive chairman of Hong Kong-based Langham Hospitality Group Ltd.

“We plan to have new ideas in the minibar—an activist toolkit, for example, that includes sheets with information to help you call your congresspeople. And if we’d been open during this year’s Women’s March, I could have seen us putting poster boards and markers in the rooms!” Lo told Bloomberg.

The cost of renting out one of the hotel’s 209 rooms has not yet been released.
