AUDIO: President Obama Slams Dismissal of Process Crime Charges Against Michael Flynn
President Barack Obama can be heard bemoaning the dismissal of criminal charges against former three-star General and White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn in new leaked audio, claiming that the decorated veteran “got off scot-free” after the criminal case was blown up by new revelations of FBI misconduct.
During the leaked call, which Yahoo News published, President Obama bemoaned Flynn’s Pardon to the Obama Alumni Association. He claimed the cessation of flimsy criminal proceedings against Flynn represented a grave danger to the rule of law, and claimed the case highlighted the importance of the 2020 election.
“And the fact that there is no precedent that anybody can find for someone who has been charged with perjury just getting off scot-free. That’s the kind of stuff where you begin to get worried that basic — not just institutional norms — but our basic understanding of rule of law is at risk. And when you start moving in those directions, it can accelerate pretty quickly as we’ve seen in other places.”
Listen to Obama’s remarks here.
The former President seems dismissive of the reality that hard misconduct at the highest levels of the January 2017 Flynn investigation was exposed within federal law enforcement. Elements of the FBI and intelligence community began a rogue operation to entrap the incoming White House National Security Advisor, who was conducting outreach to world leaders such as Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak at the time. Flynn was ultimately charged with lying to the FBI, and was never charged with violations of the Logan Act, which forbid private citizens from conducting negotiation with foreign governments.
Obama went on to slam President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, monday-morning quarterbacking and stating a neoliberal government could prove more effective in deterring the disease.
