Biden Demands Social Media Companies, TV Channels Silence “Dangerous Misinformation” on Vaccines

President Joe Biden called upon social media companies and television channels to silence what he claims is “dangerous misinformation” regarding coronavirus vaccines on Tuesday, making his latest call for a state-private partnership against protected political speech.
“These companies and personalities are making money by peddling lies and allowing misinformation that can kill their own customers and their own supporters. It’s wrong. It’s immoral. I call on the bearers of these lies and misinformation to stop it, stop it now,” said Biden of criticism of vaccines. The President was speaking in a Tuesday address on the proliferation of the omicron variant of coronavirus, a new iteration of the disease which so far appears to be more transmissible and yet less lethal than the delta variant.
“The unvaccinated are responsible for their own choices. But those choices have been fueled by dangerous misinformation on cable TV and social media,” said Biden of the media landscape.
Scientific consensus generally indicates that the coronavirus vaccines are effective at preventing severe infections of coronavirus and death, while they’re less effective at preventing the actual transmission of the disease. President Trump himself has spoken of his support for the vaccine, accusing some who criticize of it playing into the hands of the left. In recent months, coronavirus has instilled a higher fatality rate in counties that voted for Trump in 2020, with some suggesting that hesitancy regarding the vaccine may be playing a role.
There have always been internet users who choose whatever they want to believe on nearly any high-profile scientific and political topic. Demanding a wide-ranging censorship regime isn’t a solution, and if Biden didn’t want the vaccine to become a partisan political debate point, he shouldn’t have tried to force the public to take it through mandates.
