Biden In Commencement Speech: 2020 Grads Will Define What It Means to Be “Global Citizens”
Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden claimed that 2020 graduates will “redefine what it means to be a global citizen” in a virtual commencement address for Delaware State University Saturday.
“Some of you will redefine what it means to be a global citizen, and lead the way in uniting people regardless of age, race, gender, or zip code.”
You’d almost think that uniting people of differing backgrounds in the United States would entail a shared national identity, as opposed to merely being a vague and meaningless “global citizen.”
Being identified as a “global citizens” is deeply antithetical to how many American citizens define their identity, but the concept has been popular with the neoliberal globalist establishment for decades now. Biden’s endorsement of the concept could signal that he plans to govern in a fashion similar to Barack Obama, who has used the bizarre phrase in prolific fashion.
The term is almost never explicitly defined, and some have pointed out that it’s inherently contradictory. ‘Citizen’ is defined as “legally recognized subject or national of a state or commonwealth,” and the suggestion of a global citizen is an oxymoron that could only exist in a world with a global government.
Oddly enough, the 97-second video containing Biden’s commencement remarks features three different edits- suggesting the at times verbally challenged former Vice President couldn’t get through his remarks to the graduates in one take on camera.
