BIG LEAGUE TV: Northam Opponent E.W. Jackson Says He Knew Ralph Had ‘Racial Animus In Him’

E.W. Jackson, the black Republican who ran against Democrat Ralph Northam for lieutenant governor in 2013, tells Big League Politics that he is hesitant to play the race card, but he genuinely believes that Northam has “racial animus in him,” citing Northam’s refusal to shake Jackson’s hand during their televised debate. Northam is clinging to the governorship after BLP published his blackface-KKK yearbook photograph.
“I was shocked,” Jackson said of the handshake snub. “I’ve never experienced anything like that in my life, yet it was consistent with his behavior toward me throughout the campaign. He was cold, distant, and that just really put the icing on the cake.”
“I have to admit that over the course of a six-month campaign with him, I came to the conclusion that this man had some racial animus in him, which was completely inconsistent with what I was told about him…When this came out with the whole blackface situation, frankly, I might have been the only person in the whole Commonwealth of Virginia who wasn’t surprised,” Jackson said.
“I knew at that point, yeah, this guy’s got a problem,” Jackson noted.

“It was insulting, but, on the other hand, I thought it was consistent with the way he behaves. Because, this spot he’s been running, saying that I believe that a child born with birth defects is born that way because of their parents’ sin is just a damnable, palpable, despicable lie. I don’t believe that. I never said anything like that. And it’s that kind of dishonesty that, to me, says this is not the kind of person that needs to be holding state-wide office. Not shaking my hand really just confirmed that,” E.W. Jackson said in an interview on WMAL’s Mornings on the Mall.
