California To Ban Gas Vehicles by 2035

California To Ban Gas Vehicles by 2035-

On Thursday, California regulators announced a plan to ban the sale of gas cars by the year 2035.

The newly unveiled plan is intended to combat greenhouse gas emissions, fulfilling a 2020 executive order first set forth by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.

“Pull away from the gas pumps,” Newsom said. “Let us no longer be victims of geopolitical dictators that manipulate global supply chains and global markets.”

This would make California the first state in the nation to commit to such a large-scale phase out of gas cars.

The regulation still needs to be approved by the California Air Resources Board, but if it is, it would have a major impact on both the automotive industry and the fight against climate change.

Critics of the plan say that it is unrealistic and will only serve to burden consumers, while supporters argue that it is necessary in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

According to CNBC, the California Air Resources Board will vote in August to call for 35% of new car sales in the state to be battery or hydrogen-powered by as soon as 2026.

Newsom has been consistently vocal on his plans to phase out new cars with internal combustion engines within 15 years. And he hopes to achieve this tall order by requiring that all such vehicle sales produce zero emissions by 2035.

Electric car sales have been notably on the rise in California, representing about 8% of total vehicle sales in 2020, and over 12% in 2021 per CNBC.

It’s worth noting that this new roll out would not ban people from owning gas vehicles or from selling them on the used market. Even though many people speculate that these rules could change as 2035 gets closer and fears of “irreversible” ramifications from climate change enhance.

“With Californians still experiencing the harmful effects of smog-forming emissions and the effects of climate change, which are expected to worsen in the coming decades, adoption of the proposed ACC II [Advanced Clean Cars II] regulation is critical and necessary,” the California state plan said.

“Building on 30 years of work to electrify light-duty vehicles in California, the market is clearly poised for massive transformation,” the plan continued. “The state must now begin planning for this transformation and accelerating the electrification of the light-duty vehicle fleet to meet long-term climate goals.”

We have heard various democrat talking heads make these dooming claims about the need for this kind of overhaul before, stating drastic measures must be taken place “now” to “reverse climate change” before it’s “too late.” Consider Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s comments below for example.

Scott Hochberg, a transportation attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute, has made similar comments, stating, “Time is running out before the world as we know it disappears in the rearview mirror.”

“To protect people and the planet, California has to free our streets from tailpipe pollution as fast as possible,” Hochberg continued.
