China Secured $120 Million from US Universities

{China Secured $120 Million from US Universities} –China has been making a concerted effort to expand its influence in the United States by securing contracts with universities.

A recent report shows that China was able to secure $120 million worth of deals with US universities in 2021. This includes China-based entities and its government entering into arrangements with more than two dozen colleges.

“China’s ultimate goal is to control education,” said Rep. Virginia Foxx, the top Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee to Fox News. “And once you control education, you control a culture.”

According to Foxx, China has “cozied up” to higher education in the United States. Aiming to “gain influence and spread its propaganda,” at the university level.

“This report is a warning to American taxpayers and lawmakers that China is targeting our institutions of higher education in its ongoing campaign to influence American public opinion and policy,” said Rep. Hank Johnson, who requested the GAO study along with Foxx.

The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, for example, reported contracts directly with China’s government. Showing five contracts totaling a whopping $26.5 million with China operations.

According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the university has reported its third-highest totals with the communist party. Detailing that the institute hauled in $14 million in contracts with various unknown China-based entities.

The GAO report also showed that China is now the largest provider of foreign students in the US. With more than 363,000 currently enrolled. China’s contracts with US universities have increased rapidly in recent years.

In response to the findings, Johnson and Foxx urged colleges and universities to “reexamine” their relationships with China.

“It is incumbent upon our institutions of higher education to ensure that they are not unknowingly complicit in China’s propaganda efforts,” the lawmakers wrote. “We urge you to give serious consideration to these findings as you reexamine your relationship with China.”

None of this is new intel as The Trump administration focused heavily on instilling hardline stances against China, accusing it of unfair trade practices as well as intellectual property theft.

Since 2019, US universities have come under fire for their ties to China. In which the FBI warned that Chinese students and scholars could be used to steal American research. And last year, the Department of Justice charged four Chinese nationals with stealing trade secrets from US firms.

Despite these concerns, many US universities continue to partner with China. These partnerships can take various forms, such as joint research projects or student exchange programs.

Some experts believe that these partnerships are beneficial and help foster cultural understanding between the two countries. Others argue that they give China an opportunity to gain even more control over the United States and its deepening cultural divide.
