Conservative Football Legend Herschel Walker Files to Run for Georgia’s US Senate Seat

Football legend and conservative commentator Herschel Walker formed a campaign committee for the 2022 US Senate election in the state of Georgia on Tuesday, all but ensuring he’ll challenge corporate Democrat Raphael Warnock in the state’s 2022 election.

Walker could be a formidable candidate in the purple state’s midterm contest. Warnock eeked out a win in a contested 2020 election colored by the aftermath of the presidential election.

Walker was a standout running back at the University of Georgia in the 80’s before beginning a pro career that spanned more than ten years. He went public as a prominent conservative during Donald Trump’s presidency, becoming a surrogate for the former owner of the New Jersey Generals football team and speaking at the 2020 Republican National Convention in support of President Trump.

The Georgia native, who grew up as one of seven children in the small town of Wrightsville, could potentially take back the Senate seat from Warnock, whose own 2020 campaign was based upon his personal background.

A teamherschel.com campaign site was in development as of Tuesday afternoon, with the NFL legend yet to make a formal announcement of his Senate campaign.
