Donald Trump Endorses Challenger to RINO Texas House Speaker Dave Phelan
Former President Donald Trump recently endorsed David Covey to challenge incumbent House Speaker Dade Phelan.
In a post Trump published on Truth Social, he announced his endorsement of Covey, who previously served as the Orange County Republican Chairman.
“David Covey is running against Dade Phelan, the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, who led the Fraudulent Impeachment of the recently re-elected, in a landslide, Attorney General of Texas, Ken Paxton,” declared Trump.
“David is an America First Conservative who will Secure the Border, Restore Election Integrity, Protect our Families and Military/Vets, and Defend our under siege Second Amendment,” Trump added in his Truth Social post.
Trump then called attention to a media interview Phelan recently did, in which he indicated that he would vote for Trump in November during the 2024 presidential election. The former president stressed that Phelan’s words “do not mitigate the Absolute Embarrassment Speaker Phelan inflicted upon the State of Texas and our Great Republican Party!”
Attorney General Ken Paxton also endorsed Covey’s run against the House Speaker, who celebrated the former president’ announcement.
“It’s time for HD 21 to fire Dade Phelan. According to the polling I have seen, sounds like its voters are ready to send him back home,” declared Paxton.
According to a poll carried out by Texans United for a Conservative Majority that was published on the morning of January 30, 2024, Covey led Phelan by 7% margin (35-28).
The same poll found that 85% of Republican voters living in Phelan’s district — Texas House District 21— held a favorable opinion of Trump. with only 13% holding an unfavorable view of him.
Phelan, by contrast, has a negative perception among voters in the district, with 36% of individuals polled holding a favorable opinion of the House Speaker. On the other hand, 47% view him unfavorably.
Covey fully embraced Trump’s endorsement, proclaiming “America Last politicians like Dade Phelan are not welcome in the Republican Party of Texas.”
Phelan released a statement to legacy media outlets accusing his political rivals of seeking the endorsement “in yet another attempt to get retribution against me for holding public officials accountable and defending the Texas House against outside interests.”
“I have voted for President Trump twice, and I plan on voting for him a third time. Trump himself has stated he does not know me nor does he know my record of fighting for Southeast Texans,” remarked Phelan.
The Republican primary election is slated for March 5, where Texas voters will finally have the chance of potentially relieving Dade Phelan of the burden of holding higher office. Despite all the chaos present in the American political system, the primary system is still the most effective way to discipline establishment politicians who act politically out of line.
