Even the Most Basic Christian and Conservative Beliefs are Now Offensive, Discovers Student Government Nominee at Auburn University

Stephen Morris, a junior at Auburn University, was denied a position as chief justice of the Student Government Association (SGA) because some student senate members found his Christian faith and conservative beliefs “offensive” and “concerning.”

The College Fix reported the story Friday, linking to video of the Auburn SGA’s senate meeting over a Zoom call on July 12. Three black students came right out of the gate to oppose Morris’ nomination when vice president Cole Callahan called for an open forum.

“I just feel like if someone can trivialize, like, poverty to things, like, marriage and abstaining to, like, abstaining to have sex or finishing high school, like, I don’t, I can’t see how they’re trying to, how they can be in that position [of chief justice],” stuttered a student named Dionne. “And just other things they have said, especially their stance on Black Lives Matter, saying hate speech doesn’t exist. Like, how can you be a chief justice and not think hate speech doesn’t exist? Like, that doesn’t make sense.”

Two other black students, Brandan Belser and Sydney Williams, fully agreed with Dionne. Belser referred to a September 2020 tweet from Morris that called race rioters who believe police lives don’t matter “inhumane animals”:

Here are some other “scary” and “concerning” tweets from Morris (the horror!):

Morris responded as graciously as one could in this situation. “I will never, ever insert my personal opinions or beliefs into decisions,” he said, after a few students defended him from the attacks and accusations. He added that he is a sincere Christian and people should be judged by their character.

It was clear Morris would’ve been a great, highly qualified asset to Auburn student government, but sadly the student senate voted down his confirmation.

Auburn University, by the way, is located in Alabama, one of the most conservative states in the US. How unfortunate that even there young white Christians and conservatives are deemed “racist,” “offensive,” and unfit to participate in student government.
