The Italian American community was together in what seemed like a stronger and more symbolic sign of pride today at the Columbus Day Parade. As the rain came down the sound of Frank Sinatra could be heard echoing down 6th avenue, the Italian and United States flags waved side by side every where you turned. Italian Americans generally aren’t vocal about politics, most having parents or grand parents who had grown up under the rule of National Fascist Party dictator Benito Mussolini and have heard stories of the poverty and horror that many Italians suffered.
Not only today but the month of October is Italian Heritage month, so the Columbus Day parade is the one day that gives a chance for the Italian American community to celebrate where they come from and show appreciation to the country they live in. The recent vandalism by the masked cowardice Antifa anarchists and calls to tear down all Christopher Columbus statues have been met with strong pushback from Italian Americans.

The last 3months the history of our country and the men who helped it become what it is today have been under constant attack from radical left wing anarchists. Five Columbus statues have already been vandalized in NYC and they had plans to deface and destroy any other statues today was a predictable move by them. Law enforcement was properly organized with an advance in the plans being announced to the public to cause havoc and destruction. This put all law enforcement in an advantaged position to not only protect the integrity of these statues but also protect anyone who opposes the anarchists and their asinine views on the statues and monuments. Two protesters stood in the pouring rain in Columbus Circle in front of the barricaded statue with a sign that said ” Happy Columbus Day ” in red and was surrounded by the words ” genocide, rapist, terrorist, racist and murderer. ” The misinformed ( uneducated protesters actually believed Columbus entered the ” New World ” with force and came with a military
To most Italian Americans Christopher Columbus is a symbol to their connection to the United States, and a way that ties in their heritage into Americas history. The radical left wing anarchists are either uninformed, misinformed or uneducated at all about who Christopher Columbus is and what exactly it is that he did. Christopher Columbus was a nautical navigator and explorer, well know for creating very detailed maps of the ocean. Columbus made four transatlantic voyages (1492–93, 1493–96, 1498–1500, and 1502–04) and opened the way for European exploration. He has long been called the “discoverer” of the New World, although Vikings such as Leif Eriksson had visited North America five centuries earlier. Columbus made his transatlantic voyages under the sponsorship of Ferdinand II and Isabella I, the Catholic Monarchs of Aragon, Castile, and Leon in Spain. Columbus was not a military man or even mind for that matter and he did not attempt to colonize America. His discovery of America was an accident as he was searching for new trade routes hoping to cash in with the Spanish government for his findings.
