California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom has announced he intends to create legislation that would enable Democrat activists to sue companies that manufacture and sell assault weapons, styling the proposal as a vindictive-partisan reverse engineering of the Texas abortion law. The law in question, upheld by the Supreme Court on Friday, allows citizens of Texas to sue abortionists for damages.

Newsom announced the draconian proposal in a Saturday press release.

California’s firearm laws are constantly litigated over, removed, and reinstated on appeal, with such a proposal likely to ensnare law abiding patriots who obtain AR-15’s with the capacity to feed ammunition from magazines that can hold 30 rounds. It’s unclear how Newsom’s partisan-slop legislation would even define an assault weapon, a term with a questionable and decisively political origin. His definition might even apply to California-compliant weapons modified to only accept 10 round magazines.

There are fully legal “assault weapons” that have the capacity for standard 30-round magazines still legally owned and sold in California. Anyone who owned a typical AR-15 or AK-style rifle when California’s assault weapons ban was passed in 1989 had their weapon grandfathered in, although they’re not allowed to transfer them.

Newsom’s proposal would allow anti-gun activists to seek damages of more than $10,000 for every time an assault weapon is sold or manufactured in California. It would also target patriots who build rifles using a legal 80 percent lower, allowing the legal creation of AR-style rifles that haven’t been processed through the ATF’s serial number system. Partisan Democrats routinely refer to such firearms as “ghost guns,” despite their legality being well established and the build of firearms from 80 percent lowers having occurred for decades.
