State and government officials across the nation are engaging in attempts of slowing down the spread of the Chinese Virus know as COVID-19 by employing mandatory and voluntary curfews.
On Monday the governors of Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York announced that non-essential businesses such as bars, casinos, gyms, movie theaters, and performance art centers must closed by 8:00 PM. The announcement allows for restaurants to offer take-out and delivery, while supermarkets and gas stations will be able to stay open past the curfew.
New Jersey is taking precautions one step further by prohibiting travel from 8 p.m. ET to 5 a.m. ET, with the exception of essential travel.
Pennsylvania is shutting down all nonessential businesses across the state for two weeks and requesting residents to stay indoors.
Governor Gavin Newsom of California has requested that all residents sixty five years and older to stay indoors and self-isolate. The request extended to anyone with chronic health conditions. The governor also requested that bars, nightclubs, wineries, and pubs should close and that all restaurants should run at half capacity.
San Francisco and surrounding counties totaling over six and half million people will prohibit anyone from leaving their homes “except for essential needs” beginning at midnight Monday.
Cities in New England such as Bangor and Portland, Maine have declared city wide emergencies which will enact a curfew of 8 PM on all bars, restaurants, and gathering places as well as close down such places as City Hall, although city staff will keep working and will be able to assist residents via email and phone.
To see if your community has a local curfew it is best to check with local officials.
This story will be updated as curfews across the nation are enacted.
SCOTUS Hands Trump Administration Huge Pro-Life Win
The US Supreme Court on Wednesday endorsed a plan by President Donald Trump’s administration to give employers broad religious and moral exemptions from a federal mandate that health insurance they provide employees covers women’s birth control under the Affordable Care Act.
The court ruled 7-2 against the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, which challenged the legality of the Trump administration’s 2018 rule that weakening the so-called “contraceptive mandate” of the 2010 Affordable Care Act, commonly called “Obamacare”.
The opinion was written by Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Chief Justice John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh. Elena Kagan filed a concurring opinion in the judgment, in which Stephen Breyer joined. Ruth Bader Ginsburg filed a dissenting opinion, in which Sonia Sotomayor joined.
“We hold today that the Departments had the statutory authority to craft that exemption, as well as the contemporaneously issued moral exemption. We further hold that the rules promulgating these exemptions are free from procedural defects,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote. “We hold that the Departments had the authority to provide exemptions from the regulatory contraceptive requirements for employers with religious and conscientious objections. We accordingly reverse the Third Circuit’s judgment and remand with instructions to dissolve the nationwide preliminary injunction.”
The two consolidated cases that the SCOTUS heard were Little Sisters of the Poor v Pennsylvania and Donald J Trump v Pennsylvania.
