Gun Owners of America Calls On Senators to Press Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen Over Alleged Privacy Infringements on Gun Purchasers

Gun Owners of America (GOA) has been calling on senators to press Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on alleged privacy infringements of gun purchasers.
Yellen appeared in front of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee on February 8, 2024.
Per a FOX News report, GOA responded to the news that “federal investigators asked banks to search and filter customer transactions for terms related to the firearms industry.”
Aidan Johnston, GOA’s director of federal affairs, sent a letter to US senators where he stated “Congress cannot allow the federal government to continue establishing and expanding databases on guns and gun owners.”
Johnston added, “Whether it is the misuse of gun store records and financial data by the Department of Justice or firearm transaction data by the Department of the Treasury, data collection on guns and their lawful owners must be stopped.”
In a report that it published earlier, FOX noted that the Treasury Department’s Office of Stakeholder Integration and Engagement in the Strategic Operations of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) supplied banks and financial institutions with “suggested search terms and Merchant Category Codes for identifying transactions on behalf of federal law enforcement.”
The banks and financial institutions were tasked with looking for words and phrases that such as: “Trump,” “MAGA,” “Biden,” “Kamala,” “Antifa,” “White Power,” “Camp Auschwitz,” “Proud B,” “Storm, the,” “Capitol,” “Groyper Army,” “Threepers,” “boogaloo,” “civil war,” “last sons,” “kill,” “shoot,” “gun,” “death,” “murder,” “Pelosi,” “Schumer,” and “Pence.
Indeed, financial institutions, in cooperation with the federal government, are working to harass gun owners and act as private enforcement arms of Gun Control Inc. For that reason, pressure should be placed on Yellen and relevant financial authorities to back off.
Nevertheless, this represents another dynamic that must be dealt with by the political Right. Both private and public actors must be punished for their bad political behavior.
