HERO: NBA Star Kyrie Irving Rejected Contract Worth Over $100 Million to Refuse COVID-19 Vaccine

NBA star Kyrie Irving was one of the few famous individuals who loudly refused to take the COVID-19 vaccine amidst the pandemic, showing that liberty was more important than material wealth in his eyes.

Irving, who plays for the Brooklyn Nets, confirmed at a press conference earlier this week that he lost a contract worth over $100 million guaranteed because he refused to submit to the jab, a decision that he has been vindicated in doing over time.

“I gave up four years, 100-and-something million deciding to be unvaccinated and that was the decision,” Irving said at Nets media day on Monday.

“[Get this] contract, get vaccinated or be unvaccinated and there’s a level of uncertainty of your future, whether you’re going to be in this league, whether you’re going to be on this team, so I had to deal with that real-life circumstance of losing my job for this decision,” he added.

Irving made it clear that it was his vaccination status that threw a wrench into his contract talks, and Nets GM Sean Marks confirmed that is exactly how it happened.

“We were supposed to have all that figured out before training camp last year,” Irving said. “And it just didn’t happen because of the status of me being vaccinated, unvaccinated. So, I understood their point and I just had to live with it. It was a tough pill to swallow, honestly.”

“So two summers ago, that was pre-citywide, statewide mandates that went in,” Marks said. “So once the vaccine mandates came in, and we knew how that would affect [Irving] playing home games and so forth, that’s when contract talks stalled. So it didn’t get to [a point], ‘Here’s the deal, now take it back.’ That never happened.”

Big League Politics has reported on how NBA players who reluctantly submitted to the vaccine in order to make sure they got their money ultimately regretted their decision:

NBA star Andrew Wiggins is regretting his decision to submit to the coercion and social pressure by receiving the COVID-19 vaccine against his conscience and values.

Wiggins, a 2022 NBA champion who plays for the Golden State Warriors, says he regrets folding after initially refusing the experimental jab.
