In a win sure to make President Donald Trump happy, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump Administration’s travel ban for several majority Muslim countries. The case, Trump v. Hawaii came down to a 5-4 decision, with the official opinion penned by Chief Justice John Roberts. The decision came down to the fact that the travel restriction wasn’t religiously motivated, and was rather based on terrorism concerns.
“The [order] is expressly premised on legitimate purposes: preventing entry of nationals who cannot be adequately vetted and inducing other nations to improve their practices,” Roberts wrote. “The text says nothing about religion.”
The countries effected are Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen. The countries were chosen due to their ties to international terrorism, and were originally flagged by former President Barack Obama.
This Supreme Court decision allows President Donald Trump to follow through on one of his main campaign promises to secure America’s borders. Securing the border isn’t just about adding extra security to the physical border, but also making sure those who are visiting, and immigrating to the United States via airplane are vetted.
President Donald Trump responded to the decision on Twitter with a short Tweet, clearly showing his shock and excitement that the Supreme Court sided with him.
SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS TRUMP TRAVEL BAN. Wow!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 26, 2018
Trump’s travel ban has been perhaps his most controversial decision since taking office. It has spurred protests at airports nationwide, and general outrage among left-wing activists.
In reality, the ban is simply about creating a stronger system to vet people from dangerous countries. It is about making America safe again, something that Trump pledged to do on the campaign trail.
