Kentucky Senator Rand Paul devastated the Democratic Party’s impeachment hoax in a spirited Senate floor speech on Tuesday, pointing out that the process was wholly a partisan charade and illegal.
The Democrats are primed to utilize an anti-Trump Democrat Senator, Patrick Leahy, as the presiding judge of the trial. Chief Justice John Roberts has declined to preside over the trial, citing constitutional provisions which require his presence for the trial of a president- not a private citizen.
“Unity is the opposite of this travesty we are about to witness. If we are about to try and impeach a President, where is the Chief Justice? If the accused has left office, where is the constitutional power to impeach him?
Instead of doing the nation’s work, with their new majorities in the House and the Senate and the executive branch, Democrats are wasting the nation’s time on a partisan vendetta against a man no longer in office.
It’s almost as if they have no ability to exist except in opposition to Donald Trump.”
“Shame… Shame on these angry unhinged partisans, who are putting forth this sham impeachment, deranged by their hatred of the former President. Shame on those who seek blame and revenge and who choose to pervert a constitutional process while doing so.”
Paul also pointed out that the President had urged January 6th demonstrators to head to the Capitol “peacefully,” using First Amendment-protected language that would never amount to criminal incitement in any trial proceeding.
“We’re not going to go down this low road that the Democrats have decided on, of impeaching people for political speech.”
Paul lined up a vote to affirm that the Senate’s unconstitutional impeachment of a former President was illegal. 45 Republican Senators voted in the affirmative, all but assuring the Democratic sham was a dead horse. Chuck Schumer will proceed with the show trial anyway, hoping to simply inflict what he views as a black mark on President Trump.
