January 6 Committee Calls for Four Charges for Former President Donald Trump
The Select Committee tasked with investigating the January 6 Capitol storming of the Capitol recommended that the Department of Justice (DOJ) charge former President Donald Trump with four counts connected to attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
In a unanimous vote, the Daily Caller reported that the committee recommended that Trump be charged with obstructing an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the government, conspiracy to make a false statement, and inciting or assisting an insurrection. The recommendation does not carry legal force, and the DOJ is currently conducting its own investigation.
“Building on his constant repetition of the ‘Big Lie,’ President Trump engaged in an unprecedented effort to obstruct the joint session on Jan. 6, the proceeding where his electoral loss would be certified by Congress,” California Congressman Adam Schiff stated. “This effort began in part in the states, which hold, count, and ultimately determine the winners of presidential elections. Many state officials were targeted by President Trump and his campaign.”
Members of the committee called attention to Trump’s attempts to urge state and federal officials into investigating and claiming fraud. These include Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and DOJ officials Jeffrey Rosen, Richard Donoghue, and Bill Barr. Currently, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is investigating Trump and his allies’ correspondence with Raffensperger. Willis also subpoenaed Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham as a part of this investigation.
The committee also made a recommendation that the House Ethics Committee investigate California Congressman Kevin McCarthy, Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, Arizona Congressman Andy Biggs of Arizona, and Pennsylvania Congressman Scott Perry for refusing to testify despite being subpoenaed.
“At the beginning of our investigation, we understood that tens of millions of Americans had been persuaded by President Trump that the 2020 election by overwhelming fraud. And we also knew this was flatly false. We knew that dozens of state and federal judges had addressed and resolved all manner of allegation about the election. Our legal system functioned as it should. But our president would not accept the outcome,” Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney stated.
Over 900 individuals have been charged with crimes connected to the storming of the Capitol. Thus far, federal agents have gotten their hands on the cell phones of Perry, former DOJ official Jeffrey Clark, and attorney John Eastman.
The January 6 Committee is a farce of epic proportions. Unfortunately, it offers a sneak preview of the punitive politics that the Left plans on dishing out against the Right.
For that reason, the Right must be prepared to fight back with their own measures that clobber the Left and their fellow travelers. The time for taking the gloves off is now.
