Johnny Depp Rips Cancel Culture, Slams Hollywood’s Leftist Decline: “Far Out of Hand”

Actor Johnny Depp ripped the left-wing cancel culture widely pervasive in media and entertainment on Wednesday, warning members of an awards show that they could face unjust slander enabled by a corrupt mainstream media.

It’s so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you. No one out that door,” said Depp, speaking at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. Depp was receiving an honorary award.

It can be seen as an event in history that lasted for however long it lasted, this cancel culture, this instant rush to judgement based on what essentially amounts to polluted air,” Depp had earlier said.

It takes one sentence and there’s no more ground, the carpet has been pulled. It’s not just me that this has happened to, it’s happened to a lot of people. This type of thing has happened to women, men. Children have suffered from various types of unpleasantries. Sadly at a certain point, they begin to think that it’s normal. Or that it’s them. When it’s not.

The actor, one of the most popular of the 1990’s, had been the target of a cancel attempt on the part of an ex-romantic partner, Amber Heard. Heard had accused Depp of domestic violence and abuse, only for recordings indicating Heard herself had been violent to Depp leaking to the public in 2020.

Depp remarked that Hollywood had declined since his glory days as an actor, having become most widely known for playing the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

Hollywood is certainly not what it was,” he said at the awards show, pointing to the domination of large corporations in film. “The studio system, the grudge matches, the pandemonium and chaos of cinematic releases to streaming… it is a case of, ‘no matter what, I’m going to get mine’. That’s where these people are coming from.

They realize they’re just a disposable as I am. Some more so,” he continued. “Large, large corporations take control of these things. As someone who takes part in the creation of cinema, how much more formula do we need from the likes of studios? How much more condescension do we need as audiences? I think that Hollywood has grotesquely underestimated the audience.

American film has become increasingly stagnant and sterile, with filmmakers content to release sequels endlessly largely reliant on audience’s memories of movies from the past.
