Joy Reid: People Care About Ukraine Because It’s ‘White And Christian’

MSNBC host Joy Reid claimed on Monday’s episode of her infamous “The ReidOut” that people in the west care more about conflicts in Ukraine vs other parts of the world as it is a “white and Christian” nation.

Reid, to her credit, correctly pointed out that many humanitarian crises around the globe have not appeared to receive the same level of “solidarity” as what has recently been directed towards those in Ukraine. The MSNBC host said that many other conflicts receive far less attention, including conflict in Yemen involving a US-backed Saudi-based coalition that is currently waging a war leading to hunger, increased taxes on civilians, and disease.

“We should also care this much for refugees and those facing occupation and war in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, too. The coverage of Ukraine has displayed a pretty radical disparity of how human Ukrainians look and feel to Western media compared to their browner and blacker counterparts,” Reid said.

Reid then played footage of reporters from BBC, ITV and CBS calling Ukraine as a “civilized” and “European” country and suggesting that its conflict is more heartfelt since other regions like “Iraq” and “Afghanistan” are always under conflict. One reporter in the montage noted his sadness in seeing “European people with blue eyes and blonde hair being killed,” and another said, “this is not a developing third world nation, this is Europe!”

“Hm, ‘civilized.’ Let’s face it. The world is paying attention because this is happening in Europe. If this was happening anywhere else, would we be seeing the same outpour of support and compassion? We don’t need to ask ourselves if our response would be the same if Russia unleashed their horror on a country that wasn’t white and largely Christian.”

“This is a teachable moment for us in the media,” Reid continued. “We aren’t afraid to call out our own industry. There is a lot of soul searching that we need to do in Western media about why some wars and lives seem to matter more than others. And why some refugees get the welcome mat, while others get the wall.”

Interestingly, Fox News host Tucker Carlson appeared to at least partially agree with MSNBC’s Joy Reid, similarly pointing out the seeming lack of care given to many nations who have had citizens arguably endure far bloodier and deadlier consequences of war than Ukraine has thus far.

“How many people have died in the war in Ethiopia?” Tucker asked. “How many women have been raped and intentionally infected with HIV/AIDS? We don’t know because no one in the media cares to keep track of it,” he banally claimed. “Hundreds of thousands of people have died during the war in Yemen, it’s a war that the Biden administration continues to fund. But who cares? It’s just Yemen. All of us are made in the image of God, and are equal in His eyes. We should care what happens to them.

The world of Joy Reid is one filled with endless surprises. The MSNBC contributor made headlines just earlier this week after she suggested that it is “white supremacy” to question the qualifications of Biden’s SCOTUS nominee, who was hired via affirmative action by his own admission.
