Judge Issues Ruling Letting Visitors of Julian Assange To Proceed With Lawsuit Against CIA Spying

A United States judge recently issued a ruling allowing four individuals who visited whistleblower and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange while he was living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to continue their lawsuit against the CIA. This lawsuit was first filed in the summer of 2022.

The four plaintiffs in this case — journalists John Goetz and Charles in addition to lawyers Margaret Ratner Kunstler and Deborah Hrbek claim that the CIA was snooping on them.

District Court Judge John Koeltl issued the ruling as a response to the CIA requesting the Manhattan court to throw out the case.

The lawsuit argues that the spies obtained access to data copied from their phones without their knowledge. Judge Koeltl argued if this indeed occurred, it constituted an unconstitutional violation of privacy rights. For Koeltl, this is sufficient grounds for a lawsuit to move forward.

Per a report by El Pais, a contractor harvested information using concealed microphones and accessing the phones, and then sent it over to the CIA.

The judge argued that Assange’s visitors had “reasonable expectation of privacy” with respect to the data on their phones and that this is safeguarded by the Fourth Amendment. For those unaware, which are many,  the Fourth Amendment protects American citizens against unreasonable searches and seizures.

The Assange saga demonstrates how the US government has fully descended into rank despotism. Forget all the cheap talk about the “Land of the Free” and home of the brave. The US has now turned into just another polity that undermines people’s foundational liberties.

In the case of Assange, he was merely using First Amendment protected activity to expose the US national security state and its criminal activity. Clearly, the ruling class views Assange as a threat, hence their effort to imprison him.

Hopefully, more people come to Assange’s defense and expose the US national security state for the tyrannical body that it is.
