Judge Threatens to Jail Trump Lawyer Alina Habba During Trial
On January 26, 2024, the judge overseeing the defamation trial launched against former President Donald Trump allegedly issued a threat to his lawyer, Alina Habba.
In the closing argument, United States District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan said to Habba that she is “on the verge” of landing in jail if she continues talking out of order, per Politico legal reporter Erica Orden.
“You are on the verge of spending some time in the lockup. Now, sit down,” Kaplan stated, per Orden.
Habba and Trump’s other lawyer, Michael Madaio, reportedly got in an argument with Kaplan about the judge’s refusal to show a slide featuring Twitter posts that were used as evidence on a prior occasion, according to Newsweek.
Trump would later abruptly leave the courtroom during Roberta Kaplan’s closing argument, who is the attorney for E. Jean Carroll. The judge instructed Trump’s legal counsel to stay seated.
“The record will reflect that Mr. Trump just rose and walked out of the courtroom,” Kaplan announced as she interrupted the attorney’s closing argument.
Carroll filed a lawsuit with the aim of receiving $10 million in compensatory damages for “injury to her reputation, humiliation and mental anguish in her public and private life.” The new lawsuit is connected to Trump accusing her of making false statements at a CNN town hall back in May. The current lawsuit is tacked on to a lawsuit originally filed in 2019 where she accused Trump of defamation for declaring that the rape allegation was used as a way to boost her new book sales
A jury found liable for sexual battery and defamation against Carroll in a court decision made back in May 2023. Although the jury did not find Trump liable of rape, Carroll received $5 million in damages in the initial case where she accused the former president of raping her inside a department store back in the 1990s.
On a previous occasion, Trump sued Carroll for defamation towards the end of June 2023 after Carroll publicly claimed, yet again, on television after the trial that he raped her.
The ruling class is dispensing with classical liberal principles of the rule of law to suppress potential populist threats like Trump. These people are not interested in debate; they’re ready to destroy.
And the Right must be ready to respond with overwhelming force.
