Julian Assange Arrested by UK Police

Wikileaks publisher and whistleblower Julian Assange has been arrested by police in the United Kingdom, who removed him from his residence at the Ecuadorian embassy on Thursday morning.

Assange was led out of the embassy in the custody of officers. The arrest, which has been seen as increasingly likely in recent days, was caught on camera.

Assange had resided at the Embassy of Ecuador in the UK since 2012, having facing prosecution for sexual assault allegations in Sweden. The charges have since been dropped, but it’s possible the Australian journalist could face extradition to the United States to face charges related to his activities publishing documents leaked by whistleblowers.

The government of Ecuador seems to have revoked the grant of political asylum it originally gave Assange in 2012. UK government officials have thanked Ecuador for allowing them to arrest Assange, on the basis of his failure to appear in court after the 2012 sexual assault allegation.

Should Assange go on to face prosecution in the United States due to his activities with Wikileaks, he could represent one of the most high-profile individuals to face charges related to exposing sensitive information as a journalist. The Australian publisher, having once been popular on the political left for publishing materials critical of the Iraq War, became a target of animosity from the Deep State and American liberals for his exposure of the Democratic National Committee’s hacked emails, which revealed the national party rigged its 2016 Presidential Primary for Hillary Clinton.

Assange should appear in court within the coming days, and Big League Politics will continue to monitor the situation.
