Migrant Apprehensions are Overwhelming One Northern United States Border Sector

In March, Border Patrol agents in the Swanton Sector apprehended roughly 700 migrants who crossed the Canadian border into the United States. Bob Price of Breitbart News observed that these figures are “record-shattering” and mark an 1000% increase over the last year when agents apprehended 61 migrants.

From February to March, the number of migrants apprehended by agents in the Swanton Sector increased by 67% — 418 in February to roughly 700 migrants in March — per an unofficial Border Patrol report that Breitbart was able to obtain. On top of that, there were roughly 350 additional migrants who were classified as got-aways, which brought the total number of border crossers to well above 1,000 migrants.

Towards the end of March, Swanton Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia posted multiple tweets warning about the perils of illegally entering the border from Canada.

On March 30 and 31, Canadian law enforcement recovered the bodies of eight migrants — which includes two young children — who died while trying to cross the St. Lawrence River from Quebec into New York, per a Breitbart report

With the 700 migrants apprehended in March factored in, the total apprehensions for Fiscal Year 2023 has reached over 2,600. This figure is a twofold increase from 2022’s total of 1,065 migrants and is roughly equal to the prior four years combined.

The apprehension of north of 2,600 migrants in six months is on pace to break the record for the most Swanton Sector Migrant apprehensions. The prior 6-month record of 2,701 migrant apprehensions was set back in Fiscal Year 04. Thus far, in the current fiscal year, there have been 1,500 migrant got-aways in the Swanton Sector, which brought the total number of known border crossers in the Swanton Sector to over 4,200 migrants.

While the southern border is facing a much greater crisis, the US still has a relatively vulnerable northern border that requires a serious border security regime. Policymakers should focus on that as opposed to maintaining an overstretched military presence abroad.
