New Orleans’ Per Capita Murder Rate is Soaring

According to a report by Fox 8 Live, New Orleans is expected to outpace cities such as Baltimore, Birmingham, and St. Louis in terms of the per capita murder rate.

If the murders continue apace throughout the rest of the year, New Orleans is set to become the murder capital of the United States.

Per data from AH Datalytics, which turned to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, New Orleans has a per capita homicide rate of 72 per 100,000 residents so far. New Orleans is followed by cities such as Birmingham, which has a per capita homicide rate of 59 per 100,000 residents. Baltimore and St. Louis, both have a per capita homicide rate of 58 per 100,000 residents.

In addition, the report highlights figures from 2019 to 2022, specifically the increase in per capita homicide rates by city. New Orleans was at the top of the list, with an increase of 40 per 100,000 residents.  Milwaukee came in second place, which had an increase of 20 homicides per 100,000 residents.

As of June 13, 2022, New Orleans police have investigated 135 homicides in the current year per figures from the Metropolitan Crime Commission.

What New Orleans is currently facing has become a nationwide trend as more cities are descending into chaos. Order is desperately needed in cities and the only political movement willing to take this on are right-wing populists.

Law and order remains a politically popular issue and any political group who takes up this mantle will thrive at the polls.
