A prominent figure in the losing GOP establishment had an odd message for high schoolers at a Turning Point USA conference on Tuesday.
“Raise your hand if you’ve ever posted anything online to quote-unquote ‘own the libs,’” said U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley at TPUSA’s High School Leadership Summit. “I know that it’s fun and that it can feel good, but step back and think about what you’re accomplishing when you do this — are you persuading anyone? Who are you persuading? We’ve all been guilty of it at some point or another, but this kind of speech isn’t leadership — it’s the exact opposite.”
“Owning the libs” is a popular phrase used by young people to describe proverbially beating down leftists online. According to Haley, fighting the left is not a good strategy. She’d rather we return to the era of conservative “persuasion” and “leadership.”
But the left does not care about civil discourse. Republicans are the enemy to the left, and they are treated as such. One does not reason with the enemy, rather one destroys the enemy. For precisely this reason, over the past 40 years conservatives have demonstrably lost on every single issue while trying to “persuade” and “lead.”
But still, Haley seems to prefer the losing approach.
“Real leadership is about persuasion, it’s about movement, it’s bringing people around to your point of view,” she said. “Not by shouting them down, but by showing them how it is in their best interest to see things the way you do.”
Earth to Nikki Haley: The liberals aren’t “coming around.” The only way for them to “come around” is for Republicans to capitulate to their demands. That’s how we got gay marriage, transgender bathrooms, abortion on demand and unfettered illegal immigration at the Southern border.
Conservative Inc. might want to tone down the rhetoric in order to avoid confrontation, but the new GOP – the one led by President Donald J. Trump, a president whose beliefs on issues like immigration and abortion actually match that of his voters – wants to keep winning.
The dying Republican establishment needs to either take a seat or join the other party. The new GOP will take it from here.
