North Carolina Republicans Put Forward Plan to Ban Sanctuary Counties

Recently, Republicans in the North Carolina State House advanced legislation to ban sanctuary counties that provide shelter to illegal aliens and prevent them from being arrested and deported.

John Binder of Breitbart News noted that Republicans passed House Bill 10 , which State Representatives Destin Hall, Brenden Jones, Jason Saine, and Carson Smith sponsored. This bill would have all counties in North Carolina comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Per Center for Immigration Studies’ analysis,  Buncombe County, Durham County, Forsyth County, Mecklenburg County, Orange County, and Wake County are sanctuary jurisdictions that don’t even turn over  illegal aliens arrested by law enforcement over to ICE agents.

In practice, the legislation would mandate that all counties in North Carolina inform ICE agents when illegal aliens are arrested for committing local crimes and placed in local police custody.

The legislation was approved by a vote of 71 to 44. State Representative Democratic Michael Wray crossed over to vote alongside Republicans in addition to State Representative Tricia Cotham, who recently switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party, which has now given Republicans a veto-proof majority in the State House.

The bill is now heading to the North Carolina State Senate where Republicans can pass the bill and send it to Governor Roy Cooper’s desk.

Should Cooper veto this bill, which he is expected to do so, Republicans should be able to override Cooper’s veto by virtue of the supermajorities they hold in the State House and State Senate, respectively.

Unquestionably, North Carolina is a state that’s greatly impacted by mass migration. According to Pew Research, North Carolina has the 8th highest illegal alien population in the nation, with roughly 325,000 illegal aliens residing in the state. The state is already quite politically competitive and if mass amnesty were to pass, it’s likely that it would be a safe Democratic state for some time.

To prevent this outcome, solid state legislation like House Bill 10, in conjunction with strong immigration restriction measures such as an immigration moratorium, should be passed.  These are the only ways to prevent the US from being totally consumed by the Great Replacement.
