Passengers Stand By Idly as Woman Raped Aboard Crowded Subway Train

A homeless man is facing felony charges after surveillance footage revealed him assaulting and raping a woman on a crowded subway train in Philadelphia, with members of the community shocked that witnesses appear to have merely ignored the brutal crime as it was occurring in their midst.

There were a lot of people, in my opinion, that should have intervened,” said Upper Darby Police Supervisor Tim Bernhardt. “Somebody should have done something, it speaks to where we are in society, who would allow something like that to take place?

35-year old Fiston Ngoy has been charged with rape, incident assault, sexual assault and numerous other charges, and is being held in a Philadelphia jail on a $100,000 bond.

A transportation worker also questioned as to why the assault was permitted to happen, suggesting the many witnesses could’ve called 911. “There were other people on the train who witnessed this horrific act, and it may have been stopped sooner if a rider called 911.” Another transit worker had suspected something wasn’t right at around 11PM near the 69th Street Transportation Center, with police arriving and taking Ngoy into custody.

It’s disturbing that there were definitely people on the [train] and no one did anything to intervene or help this woman,” said Bernhardt. The victim would go on to provide a full account of the attack and identify her assaulter.

Civilized conceptions of criminal justice are a relatively new innovation in the history of humanity, and are long predated by anarchic systems in which the most brutal impose their will by force.
