Peloski positive for COVID-19, cancels trip to Taiwan after China warns against any contact with Taiwan.

Fully vaccinated and boosted US House Speaker Nancy Peloski has tested positive for COVID-19 just one day after appearing mask-less at a White House event with President Biden.

Some have been quick to spot the coincidental timing of this announcement, as Pelosi was previously prepared to travel to Taiwan after a stop in Japan until China warned her not to.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry told the 82-year-old Democratic leader that her trip to Taiwan would be responded with “resolute and forceful measures.” And that the consequences of her actions would bring a “disruptive impact” on the China-US relations foundation.

This is what Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told CNN: “[China] resolutely opposes all forms of official contact between the US and Taiwan. [China urges Washington to] immediately cancel Speaker Pelosi’s plan to visit Taiwan.”

Lijian added: “If the US insists on having its own way, China will take firm and strong measures to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. All possible consequences that arise from this will completely be borne by the US side”

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, shared that the House Speaker “is currently asymptomatic,” and “is thankful for the robust protection the vaccine has provided.”

Furthermore, “the Speaker will quarantine consistent with CDC guidance, and encourages everyone to get vaccinated, boosted and tested regularly.” The White House does not consider Biden a close contact.

Sen. Susan Collins’ office also announced later in the day on Thursday that she too had tested positive for COVID-19, but was experiencing “mild symptoms.”

This announcement was notably made after Collins voted in Ketanji Brown Jackson’s nomination to the Supreme Court, where Collins was only one of three republicans to vote in favor of Jackson’s 53-47 confirmation.

Once again, Americans are speculating the coincidental timing of this positive coronavirus announcement. As it appears to serve as a “get out of jail free card” for the senator who had just voted against her party a few hours prior.

A tweet from Bryan Metzger reads, “[Collins] was in the Senate chamber for the KBJ vote hours ago, but somewhat conspicuously was wearing a KN-95 mask when she voted AYE.”

Though it hasn’t been confirmed if the Pelosi and Collins coronavirus announcements were merely made due to political pressures, Americans surely notice their predictable timing.

Both individuals will be quarantining and testing regularly in compliance with CDC guidance, buying them each more time out of the spotlight while news cycles move on.
