POLL: Americans Do Not Want More Gun Control Laws

44% of likely United States voters believe tighter gun control laws would assist in preventing mass shootings such as the most recent one in Maine, per a Rasmussen poll.

That said, 49% still don’t believe tighter gun control measures would help stop such shootings.

In this mass shooting, a 40-year-old Army reservist killed 18 people in Lewiston, Maine. 30% of voters believe passing new gun control laws would do more to lower gun violence in America. 57% of voters believe stricter enforcement current gun control laws would do more to stop gun violence. 13% are unsure.

29% of voters believe it is possible to totally prevent mass shootings such as the one in Lewiston, Maine. However, 56% said it’s not possible. An additional 15% are unsure.

44% of Democrat voters believe it is possible to completely stop mass shootings. However, 21% of Republican voters and 19% of independent voters share this view. 66% of Republican voters, 41% of Democrat voters, and 63% of independent voters say it is impossible to completely stop mass shootings such as Lewiston massacre.

71% of Republican voters, 43% of Democrat voters, and 58% of independent voters believe tougher enforcement of current gun control laws would do more to lower gun violence in America. 49% of Democrats voters, 16% of Republican voters, and 22% of independent voters believe passing new gun control measures would do more to lower gun violence.

68% of Democrat voters believe stricter gun control measures would help stop shootings such as the recent one in Maine. However, only 26% of Republican voters and 34% of independent voters agree. 70% of Republican voters, 24% of Democrat voters, and 55% of independent voters don’t believe stricter gun control laws would help in preventing such shootings.

42% of white voters, 51% of black voters, and 46% of non-black minorities believe stricter gun control laws would help prevent shootings similar to the one in Lewiston, Maine. 52% of white voters, 39% of black voters, and 45% of non-black minorities don’t believe stricter gun control laws would help stop such shootings.

As for income earners, those making over $100,000 believe stricter gun control laws would help stop shootings such as the recent one in Maine. Individuals making less than $30,000 annually are the economic group most likely to disagree with this sentiment.

Gun control doesn’t work. It only benefits criminals, who don’t care about the law, at the law-abiding citizenry’s expense. Instead of enforcing current gun control measures, Americans should focus more on repealing all unconstitutional measures that prevent people from fully exercising their right to bear arms.

An armed society is ultimately a safe society.
