POLL: Close to 60% of Voters Say The US Government Spends Too Much Money On Foreign Aid

Critiques of foreign aid have increased in light of the recent passage of a $95 billion foreign aid bill. According to a Rasmussen poll, 57% of likely United States Voters believe that the US government generally spends too much money on foreign aid. Only 10% believe foreign aid spending is insufficient, whereas 23% stated the amount is just fine. 

On April 20, 2024, the US House passed the military aid bill, which allocated $60 billion in aid to Ukraine. 47% of voters believe that this aid package is too much. By contrast, 20% believe that the amount of aid that Ukraine received is insufficient and 24% believe the amount is largely fine. An additional 10% are unsure about the soundness of this policy. 

The foreign aid bill also allocated $17 billion of aid to Israel. 38% believe that sum is too much, whereas 16% believe the total sum of aid to Israel is insufficient and 33% stated it’s just fine. 14% are unsure.

62% of Republican voters and 48% of independent voters believe the amount of aid the US government is sending to Ukraine is too much. However, only 30% of Democrat voters are in agreement. By contrast, 28% of Democrats believe the amount of foreign aid the US government is sending to Ukraine is not enough, while 31% of them believe the amount of aid is just right.  

44% of Democrat voters, 31% of Republican voters, and 37% of independent voters indicated that the amount of American aid to Israel is too much.

20% of Republican voters, 11% of Democrat voters, and 17% of independent voters believe the amount of aid to Israel is insufficient. 37% of Republican voters, 29% of Democrat voters, and 33% of independent voters believe the amount of aid to Israel is roughly correct.

71% of Republican voters and 61% of independent voters believe that the US government generally spends too much on foreign aid. On the other hand, 44% of Democrats are in agreement.

With respect to race, 40% of white voters,  26% of black voters, and 34% of Hispanic voters believe the amount of aid being sent to Israel is too much.

49% of self-identified liberal voters believe the foreign aid legislation features too much money for Israel. However, only 36% of moderate voters and 31% of conservative voters hold the same opinion. 

61% of conservative voters,  42% of moderate voters, and 27% of liberal voters indicated that there is too much money for Ukraine in the foreign aid legislation.

When it comes to money makers, those making over $200,000 annually are least likely to believe the US government is spending too much on military aid to Ukraine. Voters with yearly incomes below $50,000 are most likely to say that the US generally spends too much on foreign aid.

Overall, the US spends too much on military aid to foreign countries. If we had a rational security policy, this money would be spent on actual national defense i.e. border security.
