POLL: Voters Want Smaller Government & Lower Taxes

According to a poll published by Rasmussen, 52% of likely United States voters prefer having a smaller government featuring reduced services and a lower tax burden. 

38% of voters disagree and prefer a larger government with more services and higher taxes. An additional 10% are unsure. 

72% of voters indicated that the government does not spend taxpayer dollars in a prudential manner. Only 16% believe the government does spend taxpayer money in a sensible manner. 12% aren’t unsure.

74% of Republican voters overwhelmingly support the idea of a smaller government with fewer services and lower taxes, in addition to 30% of Democrat voters and 55% of independent voters. 58% of Democrat voters desire a larger government with increased services and higher taxes, on top of 21% of Republican voters and 32% of independent voters.

31% of Democrat voters, 10% of Republican voters, and 6% of independent voters believe the government spends taxpayer dollars in a wise manner. By contrast, 52% of Democrat voters, 8 4% of Republican voters, and 81% of independent voters believe that the government does not spend taxpayer dollars wisely. 

55% of white voters, 46% of black voters, and 48% of non-black minorities prefer a smaller government featuring fewer services and lower taxes. 34% of white voters, 40% of black voters, and 48% of other non-black minorities are in favor of a more active government with additional services and higher taxes.

27% of government employees believe the government spends taxpayer money in a wise fashion, whereas 15% of private sector workers and 17% of retirees share the same view. 

When it comes to socio-economic background, individuals making between $30,000 and $50,000 annually are the most likely to support a  smaller government.

Indeed, the voters are sensible on the question of the size and scope of the government. They understand that a big government is not expensive, but also presents a major threat to their civil liberties. The political class, on the other hand, is obsessed with maintaining a massive state that intrudes on the rights of average Americans. 

Simply put, to revert to a government based on foundational principles, the current ruling class must be thrown out of office. Their continued presence presents a major threat to Americans’ freedoms.
