Republican Party Establishment Torpedos Rand Paul’s Balanced Budget Amendment

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is a lone voice in the wilderness who generally introduces legislation to restrain DC’s reckless spending. Tyler Durden of ZeroHedge observed that Paul has consistently done so over the past decade.
Durden observed the following:
Every few years, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul puts forth a quixotic proposal to balance the federal budget. It’s not the financial math that makes it a daunting task, but rather Washington’s bipartisan addiction to spending.
Despite failing, Durden noted that Paul’s legislative efforts serve a purpose:
First, it puts senators who’ve espoused fiscal discipline on the record as opposing it when the rubber meets the road. Second, over time, Paul’s proposals illustrate the insidious effect of kicking the can down the road—as each new proposal requires bigger cuts to push Uncle Sam to breakeven.
The latest proposal Rand Paul put forward would cut $.06 out of each spending dollar for five years. The usual suspects such as Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders criticized Paul’s plan and declared that “massive cuts to programs the American people need.”
Paul countered by noting that “All this plan does is return to 2019 spending levels. If the federal government spent at 2019 levels this year, we would have a $388 billion surplus.”
The Kentucky Senator’s proposal was unfortunately taken down by a 67-29 vote. All Democrats voted against this bill, which was to be expected.
However, big spending is a bipartisan endeavor. Durden exposed the 17 “fiscally conservative” Republicans who voted against this bill:
Blunt (MO), Boozman (AR), Burr (NC), Capito (WV), Collins (ME), Cornyn (TX), Graham (SC), Inhofe (OK), McConnell (KY), Murkowski (AK), Portman (OH), Rounds (SD), Sasse (NE), Shelby (AL), Thune (SD), Tillis (NC) and Young (IN).
Durden added, “Dodging Paul’s intent to put everyone’s true fiscal colors on the record, four Republicans skipped the vote altogether: Daines (MT), Moran (KS), Toomey (PA) and Wicker (MS).”
Clearly, there’s very little desire to tame spending in the DC Swamp. To make fiscal conservatism a reality, Republicans should focus on defunding the increasingly woke warfare state and promoting competing currencies in order to deprive the state of a printing press to finance their domestic and foreign policy largesse.
America’s current fiscal trajectory is unsustainable and if no one properly addresses it, the country will be on the fast track to fiscal ruin.
