Republicans Advance Legislation To Ban Sanctuary Cities In North Carolina

Republicans in North Carolina are putting forward legislation to ban sanctuary jurisdictions, mandating police to cooperate in sending over criminal illegal aliens to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

On April 30, 2024, the North Carolina State Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation that will mandate North Carolina police departments and sheriff’s offices to work with ICE agents when they are attempting to take custody of a criminal illegal alien.

With strong supermajorities in the State House and State Senate, Republicans will likely approve the bill and override Governor Roy Cooper’s veto. In 2022, the State House and Senate passed the legislation and sent it over to receive Cooper’s signature. However, he ended up vetoing the bill.

The bill would guarantee that North Carolina’s sanctuary jurisdictions — Buncombe County, Durham County, Forsyth County, Mecklenburg County, Orange County, and Wake County — can no longer protect criminal illegal aliens in their custody from immigration enforcement officials by refusing to hand them over to ICE agents.

While North Carolina is a red state, it has some of the most notorious sanctuary jurisdictions in the nation. According to a report by the Immigration Reform Law Institute in 2022, Wake County was named as one of the most dangerous sanctuary jurisdictions in the country

Despite its reputation as a red-leaning swing state, North Carolina is home to some of the nation’s most prominent sanctuary jurisdictions. In 2022, the Immigration Reform Law Institute named Wake County as one of the most dangerous sanctuary jurisdictions in the country.

Such legislation is necessary to not only protect North Carolina from the scourge of mass migration but also to keep the state red. After all, mass migration is the election strategy Democrats are pursuing in order to “elect a new people” that will establish a one-party state.

Immigration restriction is the only way to prevent such a nightmare scenario.
