Republicans Warn Google to Not Censor Pro-Life Clinics

On July 21, 2022 , 17 Republican attorneys general sent a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai warning the tech giant against restricting search results for pro-life clinics. They even threatened legal action against the company should it continue to censor these search results.

As Cindy Harper of Reclaim the Net observed, the Republican letter is apparently a response to a separate letter Democrat elected officials sent to the Big Tech Titan. In that letter, Democrats called on Google to restrict the appearance of pro-life clinics in the search results of people looking for abortion clinics.

The letters the Democrat lawmakers sent used research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate. In this research, the CCDH discovered that searches for “abortion pill” and “abortion clinic near me” yielded results for pro-life pregnancy centers that assist women.

“Directing women towards fake clinics that traffic in misinformation and don’t provide comprehensive health services is dangerous to women’s health and undermines the integrity of Google’s search results,” the letter signed by Democrats said. This letter was sent in June, following the draft opinion leak indicating the court’s eventual move to overturn Roe v. Wade.

GOP attorneys general warned Google against serving as a private censorship arm of pro-choice Democrat.

“Suppressing pro-life and pro-mother voices at the urging of government officials would violate the most fundamental tenet of the American marketplace of ideas,” the GOP attorneys general declared in the letter.

The AGs called attention to how the pro-life pregnancy centers provide important services such as free parenting classes, pregnancy tests, and ultrasounds.

The Republicans AGs warned that if Google follows through with the “inappropriate demand” from the Democrats to “bias” search results, their offices would be forced to pursue legal action. This would include launching investigations into Google’s politically-motivated actions to determine if it is in violation of religious discrimination and antitrust laws.

“We trust that you will treat this letter with the seriousness these issues require, and hope you will decide that Google’s search results must not be subject to left-wing political pressure, which would actively harm women seeking essential assistance. If you do not, we must avail ourselves of all lawful and appropriate means of protecting the rights of our constituents, of upholding viewpoint diversity, free expression, and the freedom of religion for all Americans, and of making sure that our markets are free in fact, not merely in theory,” the letter stated.

In the 21st century, we’re witnessing new political dynamics in play. It’s no longer sufficient to analyze politics through the lens of a private vs. public sector dichotomy.

Companies like Google function as private arms of the current managerial regime that is dedicated to promoting anti-social activity such as abortion and sexual deviancy. Since the present regime faces many challenges owing to the checks and balances of the American political system and the robust federal nature of this same system, political elites have outsourced their social engineering to major corporations.

In this instance, Republicans are correct to threaten Google with state action. The only language these entities speak is force and it’s high time that Republicans stop worshiping corporations, especially when these very institutions behave in ways that undermine traditional conservative values.

When corporations get out of line, serious right-wing populist governments must respond in kind with punitive measures.
