Russia Plans on Sending Troops to Nicaragua for “Humanitarian Operations”

US policymakers who think that poking the Russian Bear is a sage foreign policy strategy are in for a rude awakening.

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega announced on June 9, 2022 that Russian troops will be allowed to enter Nicaragua and carry out law enforcement functions.

As Tyler Durden of ZeroHedge noted, this move by Nicaragua in inviting Russian troops “will certainly upset the current mainstream narrative that Russia has been ‘isolated’ from the rest of the world by Western sanctions.”

Russian authorities have downplayed the impact of this troop deployment to Nicaragua by describing it as “routine.”

However, Nicaraguan state television offered a more ominous message:

‘If U.S. missile systems can almost reach Moscow from Ukrainian territory, it is time for Russia to deploy something powerful closer to U.S. cities…’

Despite the US and the Collective West’s best efforts to isolate Russia, the BRICS countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — have maintained trade relations with Russia.

Nicaragua, along with Cuba and Venezuela, are part of the so-called “Troika of Tyranny”  that opposes US hegemony in Latin America and have aligned themselves with American adversaries such as China, Iran, and Russia. The more the US tries saber-rattling in Eurasia, the more likely powers like China and Russia will return the favor by poking the US in the eye by bolstering ties with countries in Latin America and potentially creating security crises in the Western Hemisphere.

We’re now entering the era of geopolitics where it would behoove the US to use realism and restraint in its foreign policy maneuvers. The days of it throwing its weight around without much in terms of negative consequences are long gone.
