Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Believes the US Deep State Wants to Turn the Entire Planet into Its Backyard

At the General Debate during the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared that the United States government is attempting to turn the entire planet into its “backyard”. He also called attention to the US’s use of unilateral sanctions against countries that disagree with the liberal hegemonic order.
“The notorious Monroe Doctrine has been getting global. Washington has been trying to turn the entire globe into its `backyard’,” he declared. “And illegitimate illegal sanctions have been imposed in violation of the US Charter against those who disagree and used as a tool of political blackmail for years. This practice is obviously cynical, since the restrictions hurt civilians, while hampering their access to essential goods, including medicines, vaccines and food products.”
The Monroe Doctrine refers to the US’s policy towards the Western Hemisphere in the early days of the republic where it wanted European powers to stay out of this hemisphere. It has been the cornerstone of US geopolitics from the 1820s until the mid-20th century. However, since the end of World War II, the US has abandoned sphere of influence geopolitics and pursued a more universalist form of foreign policy where it treats the whole globe as its sphere of influence.
In terms of foreign policy grievances, Lavrov criticized “the US blockade of Cuba that has been in place for more than 60 years.” “The UN General Assembly has long been insisting with an overwhelming majority of votes that that be lifted,” Lavrov continued. He demanded that the UN Secretary General put particular emphasis on that problem.
Lavrov is correct in exposing the US’s imperialist ambitions. This is a far cry from its early Republican phase when it embraced a more restrained approach to geopolitics that was limited to the Western Hemisphere.
Unfortunately, the DC Swamp class is monolithically in favor of a missionary foreign policy. A true changing of elites is needed for DC to change its self-destructive path.
At a glance, America First is the movement that could potentially change DC’s foreign policy vision. It remains to be seen if America First types are able to take power and fundamentally transform US foreign policy.
