Serbian President Believes Pro-Ukrainian Elements are Trying to Destabilize His Country

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic believes that pro-Western and pro-Ukrainian actors are trying to undermine his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Those who are pro-Ukrainian and those who are pro-Western are trying to spoil relations [between Vucic] and Putin. <…> They are in no way interested in supporting Ukraine, about which they keep talking every single day,” the Serbian president said on April 13, 2023.

Following Russia’s launch of its special military operation in Ukraine, Vucic gave a national address following a Security Council meeting, declaring that Serbia supported Ukraine’s territorial integrity, but would not slap sanctions on Russia.

Serbia views Russia and Ukraine as sister nations, laments the developments in eastern Europe, and is ready to supply humanitarian aid to Ukraine, he said during the early days of the Russian SMO. Vucic has repeatedly stated that the Serbia government’s decision not to impose sanctions on Russia was correct and was in line with Serbia’s interests.

Vucic is a certified geopolitical realist. He understands that while Russia’s actions may be unsavory, Serbia does not benefit by joining the anti-Russia bandwagon and instead is better served by acting as a neutral actor. Such geopolitical behavior flies over the heads of the NATO fanatics who are committed to prosecuting never-ending wars.
