Trump Blasts Paul Ryan Over Birthright Citizenship Comments

President Donald J. Trump took to Twitter Wednesday to fire back at the Speaker of the House, who criticized his plan for potentially ending birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants.

“Paul Ryan should be focusing on holding the Majority rather than giving his opinions on Birthright Citizenship, something he knows nothing about! Our new Republican Majority will work on this, Closing the Immigration Loopholes and Securing our Border!” Trump said.

Ryan weighed in Tuesday, telling Trump that he could not end birthright citizenship via executive order.

“As a conservative, I’m a believer in following the plain text of the Constitution and I think in this case the 14th Amendment is pretty clear,” he said. “Where we obviously totally agree with the President is getting at the root issue here, which is unchecked illegal immigration. We — House Republicans and this President — are in total agreement on the need to stop illegal immigration, to secure our border and fix our laws.”

But Ryan, who mercifully will retire at the end of his term, has never been in favor of “fixing our laws.” If he cared enough about what ordinary Americans want – stronger immigration policy – he would have used the Republican majority in the House and Senate to pass a bill in response to the demands of the people.

He has failed to do so, and his legacy will suffer for it.
