Trump-Endorsed Candidate Bernie Moreno Wins Ohio Senate Primary
On March 19, 2024, businessman Bernie Moreno won the Ohio Republican Senate primary. With a crucial endorsement from former President Donald Trump, Moreno was able to pick up 50.4% of the vote. Moreno was able to receive another key endorsement from sitting Ohio Senator JD Vance.
State Senator Matt Dolan and Secretary of State Frank LaRose picked up 32.7% and 16.9% of the vote, respectively. Now, Moreno will square off against incumbent Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, who many people live Moreno can defeat in the 2024 election cycle.
“I am so grateful for the resounding support of Ohioans in all 88 counties,” Moreno declared in a statement. “I thank Matt Dolan and Frank LaRose for a spirited primary contest. I look forward to uniting our party and working to send Sherrod Brown packing in November!”
“I’m honored and humbled by the thousands of Ohioans who stood with me in this campaign. While this is not my time to serve as our party’s nominee for the United States Senate, I’m profoundly grateful for those who gave me their support,” LaRose declared in a statement. “Now is the time to stand together as a party. Moments ago, I called to congratulate Bernie Moreno and wish him well. We all share the same mission to retire Sherrod Brown and restore Ohio’s voice and values to the United States Senate. The stakes for this election couldn’t be higher.”
Key issues such as abortion, border security, and Ukraine funding were heavily debated in this primary. Big money was dropped on ads throughout this Senate race, which includes $19.1 million in ads promoting Dolan, $15 million boosting Moreno, and $5.5 million advancing LaRose, per data gathered by AdImpact.
The Cook Political Report has labeled the Ohio Senate race as a “Toss Up” race. Moreno is a solid America First candidate that would help out greatly in the Senate. Nevertheless, we should remember that becoming complacent here is not an option. Even if Moreno is elected, he must still be held accountable and have pressure placed on him so that he does the right thing.
Politicians will ultimately legislate correctly should sufficient grassroots pressure be placed on them.
