Trump-Endorsed Pennsylvania US Senate Candidate Sean Parnell Suspends Campaign

Pennsylvania US Senate and Army infantry veteran Sean Parnell is expected to suspend his campaign on Monday, according to new reporting from Politico.

Parnell had received the endorsement of President Donald Trump in a campaign to replace retiring incumbent Senator Pat Toomey. Parnell has been involved in litigation for custody of his children recently, a development that may have led the decorated veteran to rethink his campaign for national office. Parnell is a personal friend of Donald Trump Jr.

Republican figures such as Gen. Michael Flynn and Sebastian Gorka have already endorsed Kathy Barnette, an author and veteran who would be the first female black Republican in the history of the Senate if elected.

The suspension opens up a vacuum in Pennsylvania’s Republican primary, with Parnell having been considered a clear favorite. Area Republican activists have suggested that decorated Army officer and former Pentagon official Douglas McGregor consider running for the seat. McGregor distinguished himself as one of the few Pentagon and federal officials dedicated to carrying out President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy vision.

The Pennsylvania race is thought to be critical towards Republican prospects of flipping control of the US Senate in the 2022 midterms. Democratic candidates for the Senate seat include Lieutentant Governor John Fetterman and Representative Connor Lamb.
