United States Senator Robert Menendez is Charged With Acting as a Foreign Agent for Egypt
In early October, United States Senator Robert Menendez was charged with conspiring to act as a foreign agent for the Egyptian government. This was the latest chapter in a legal saga where the former chair of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has been accused of accepting bribes to the benefit of the Egyptian government.
In an indictment filed on October 12, 2023 Thursday, federal prosecutors alleged that Menendez “provided sensitive U.S. Government information and took other steps that secretly aided the Government of Egypt.”
The senator, his wife Nadine, and an Egyptian-American businessman allegedly engaged in a conspiracy between 2018 and 2022 to have Menendez effectively serve as a foreign agent of Egypt, per the court filing.
Egypt is one of the more corrupt nations in the world. According to Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index rankings, it was ranked in 130th place in terms of how corrupt its public sector is perceived to be.
This is one country that the US should not be getting cozy with. It’s truly pathetic that Melendez would essentially prostitute himself to a corrupt emerging market in Egypt. It goes to show how corrupt US politicians have become. They’re essentially for sale.
Menendez is among the most hawkish of Senators in the US Senate. He has been a frequent booster of taking punitive action against countries such as China, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela. Such hawkish behavior landed him his posh position at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Hopefully, Menendez is removed from power. We don’t need any more corrupt politicians in office.
Sadly, though, Menendez’s replacement will likely be as hawkish if not more hawkish than him. That’s the problem with American politics.
The fact of the matter is that the political system is thoroughly captured by a foreign policy machine that is able to churn out hawkish politicians like it’s no one’s business. Even when a bad politician is removed from office, rest assured, the interventionist machine will quickly find a replacement.
At the end of the day, an America First takeover of the political system is needed for the country to move in a more non-interventionist foreign policy direction.
