President Donald J. Trump has pardoned the first black heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson for the long-ago crime of transporting a woman across state lines for immoral purposes — in other words, he married a white woman.
“It’s my honor to do it, it’s about time,” Trump said in the Oval Office Thursday as legendary boxers and Sylvester Stallone — who pushed Trump on the issue in a phone call — surrounded the president’s desk.
