Will “COVID Marshals” Patrol the Streets of Britain Until 2023?

Councils across the United Kingdom are still seeking new “COVID marshals” despite the government’s apparent commitment to lifting all restrictions on June 21.
The Telegraph is reporting that some county councils will continue to employ COVID marshals beyond June 21. Many of these new positions will not begin until July.
“Hertfordshire County Council is among those advertising for marshals, offering a contract of up to £3 million to firms that can supply 60 marshals from July 1 until January 31 next year,” according to the report. “The contract comes with a possible one-year extension, meaning marshals would still be patrolling until 2023.”
“Their duties will include aiding and encouraging ‘compliance’ and helping the public and businesses understand ‘regulations and guidance’,” it added.
Although the British government is planning on removing restrictions June 21, there are many indications that this definitely won’t mean a “return to normal.” In addition to the continued presence of COVID marshals, The Telegraph has reported that the government’s “scientific advisers” want “baseline measures” such as social distancing to be in place for another year. Parliament will also maintain the power to impose restrictions until at least September.
COVID deaths in the UK have dropped to a several-month low and the country’s vaccination rate is among the highest in the world. As of April 26, the UK has administered 69 doses per 100 people. For comparison, the United States has administered 68 per 100 people.
