Zelensky: Chinese Military Aid to Russia Will Cause World War III
On February 20, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that if China were to supply Russia with military aid it will kick off World War III.
This military aid could hypothetically put Russia over the top in its fight against Ukraine.
Per a report by the Daily Mail, Zelensky told the German newspaper Die Welt: “For us, it is important that China does not support the Russian Federation in this war. In fact, I would like it to be on our side. At the moment, however, I don’t think it’s possible. But I do see an opportunity for China to make a pragmatic assessment of what is happening here. Because if China allies itself with Russia, there will be a world war, and I do think that China is aware of that.”
Zelensky’s remarks happened at the same time as United States Joe Biden made a surprise trip to Kiev and promised an additional $500 million in aid and increased sanctions on Russia. Thus far, the US has sent a total of $30 billion in arms to Ukraine and an additional $50 million in humanitarian aid.
China’s foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin sharply rebuked Zelensky’s statement declaring “It is the United States and not China that is endlessly shipping weapons to the battlefield.”
“We urge the United States to earnestly reflect on its own actions, and do more to alleviate the situation, promote peace and dialogue, and stop shifting blame and spreading false information,” the Chinese spokesman continued.
On February 18, Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with Chinese senior diplomat Wang Yi at the Munich Security Conference, per a report by CNN.
Blinken “warned” Yi of “consequences should his country wade into the ongoing conflict” in Ukraine, per the Daily Mail report. Blinken warned the Chinese about not providing military aid to Russia.
China and Russia’s tightening of relations is frightening for the fact that it represents a de facto Eurasian balancing coalition against potential Western incursions into the region. Such an alliance could have been prevented if the US had taken a much more restrained foreign policy that did not pursue unipolar hegemony across the globe.
Alas, the US appears to be pursuing dual containment against two nuclear powers — a frightening project that greatly threatens world stability.
