All-Male Historically Black College is Criticized for Toxic Masculinity

By Jose Nino

Morehouse College, America’s only all-male historically black college or university, pushes the “Morehouse Man” ideology based on ideals like “acuity, integrity and agency.”

This college’s motto has inspired the likes of Martin Luther King Jr., Howard Thurman, Spike Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, and Herman Cain to become respected African American leaders in their respective fields.

However, one professor views the Morehouse Man as a “toxic idea” according to a report from The College Fix.

In a speech on October 25, 2019, Georgetown University Law Professor Jill Morrison criticized the concept.

During the Georgetown Women and Gender Studies Program’s “Gender+Justice Annual Faculty Research Colloquium“, she sustained that Morehouse College’s standards create an “exceptionally toxic environment for those who do not conform to the ideal for black masculinity.”

Her talk was focused on Title IX discrimination of single-sex HBCUs with regard to their transgender policies. Throughout her talk, she spent most of the time bashing Morehouse College as a center of toxic masculinity.

Morrison went on to quote an alumnus of the college who argued that the Morehouse Man ideal “…represents the perfect storm of homophobia, racial and class anxieties of exceptional negroes, masculine gender trouble, class conflict and fundamentalist religious baggage, or as some might say, ‘heritage or tradition.’”

Despite the fact that Morehouse will begin to admit transgender men, or biological women who identify as men, next year, Morrison continued to attack the HBCU.

“Most troubling,” she stated, is that “if a student transitions from a man to a woman or identifies as a woman, that student will no longer be eligible to matriculate at Morehouse and graduate.”

On other hand, Morrison used the example of the historic, all-female Spelman College to illustrate their more “progressive” policies of accepting trans women and letting women currently enrolled at the college transition to men and still graduate.

However, in Morrison’s view, Spelman could go even further by providing for “more gender inclusive housing and bathrooms” at the all-women’s college. Morrison claimed that the first “male” Spelman graduate in 2017 complained about a “lack of understanding of the non-binary on campus and backlash from those who questioned his place at an all-women’s college.”

Before Morehouse decided to admit trans men, Morrison published a research project titled “Redefining the ‘Morehouse Man’: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity at Morehouse College in the Wake of Spelman’s Decision to Accept Transwomen” in the Journal of Gender, Race & Justice during the Spring of 2019.

It asserted that “although Title IX allows for single-sex colleges to discriminate on the basis of sex, this exemption should be read narrowly to require Morehouse to accept transmen.”

In addition, the research project reviewed “Morehouse’s record of being hostile to those who identify as gay and/or gender non-conforming, and its legal obligations to these students.”

At the colloquium, Morrison profusely praised Mount Holyoke College, a women’s college in Massachusetts, which accepts every gender identity except individuals born male who identify as male.

“The mission of women’s colleges is not diminished by the presence of anyone who supports that mission, regardless of their gender identity,” she stated.

As political correctness becomes ingrained at universities nationwide, there will be more calls to get rid of “toxic masculinity” at universities like Morrison wants at HBCUs.

The radical left and their surrogates at universities want to eliminate all sane facets of Western societies and re-engineer them along cultural and biological lines.

Such moves will put many American freedoms and traditions at risk of being trampled on.
