On January 28, 2023, President Alberto Fernandez announced that Argentina and other Latin American countries don’t have plans of providing weapons to Ukraine and other regions mired in conflict. Although Fernandez condemned Russia’s military action in Ukraine, he is not willing to have his government send weapons to Ukraine.
Fernandez stressed that “We have always supported European policy” looking to end hostilities “as soon as possible.”
“Argentina and Latin America are not thinking about sending arms either to Ukraine or to any other conflict zone,” he said during a press conference in Buenos Aires after holding a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
However, he emphasized that Russia must “understand what damage it is causing to the whole world” with its military operation in Ukraine. He shared this same “concern” with Scholz in their private conversation. Recently, Brazil president Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva and Colombian president Gustavo Petro, had also publicly opposed sending arms to Ukraine.
The multipolar world will not be so favorable towards the neoconservative/neoliberal vision for unipolarity. Many regions such as Latin America want no part in engaging in the US’s geopolitical ventures abroad. Such opposition will continue to grow as countries grow concerned of US influence and start maintaining balanced geopolitical options with the Eurasian powers such as China and Russia.
